Our history – From the first stone to today
1934 – Founding
Heinrich W. Muhr founded the company Muhr & Söhne in Bruchwalze and took over the Bruchwalze ring kiln brickworks in 1937. Due to the construction of the Bigge Dam, the brickworks had to be relocated in 1965.
1956 – Takeover of the factory in Emmerich am Rhein
As a replacement, Muhr acquired the Ignatz Pastor brickworks in Emmerich am Rhein, a traditional ring kiln brickworks for the production of hand-moulded facing bricks. After the destruction of Emmerich am Rhein in the Second World War, the brickworks changed hands several times until Muhr took it over.
Modernisation and growth
In 1964, artificial drying was introduced, and in 1965, the ring kiln was expanded and converted to natural gas. In 1966, the first machine press was added, enabling the parallel production of hand-moulded and pressed bricks.
New construction and expansion
Between 1968 and 1973, a new factory was built with an annual capacity of 25 million bricks. Wolfgang Muhr took over management in 1970. By 1979, additional presses and kilns had been installed, increasing production to 50 million bricks per year.
1988 to 2000 – Progress and automation
A modern unloading and packaging plant (1988), a new clay processing facility (1989) and the acquisition of the Lichterfeld clinker plant (1991) strengthened the company's competitiveness. Despite flood damage in 1993 and 1995, further investments were made, for example in the renewal of the setting and unloading technology (1993–1997) and the introduction of ecological building materials (1995).
Today
Maik Muhr has been managing the company since 2004 as the third generation of the family. Klinkerwerke Muhr is committed to continuous modernisation, sustainability and the highest quality in production.
